Christmas Day
The Most Wonderful Time of the Year
Christmas, or Christmas Day is an annual holiday celebrated on December 25th. It’s the biggest holiday of the year for Western and Western-influenced countries and is celebrated by billions of people across the world.
Traditionally, Christmas is a day to celebrate the nativity and birth of Jesus Christ. It is preceded by the season of Advent, which starts four Sundays before the 25th and acts as period of preparation for Christmas Day. December 25th also starts off Twelvetide, more commonly known as The Twelve Days of Christmas, this runs through to January 5th.
Although Christmas is a Christian holiday, it’s also celebrated by many non-Christians too. Christmas Day typically consist of spending time with family and friends, gift-exchanging, and a large meal. However, the date and manner in which people celebrate Christmas varies from different countries and cultures. Some countries celebrate Christmas on December 24th, also known as Christmas Eve. In this case, people will celebrate the whole evening of Christmas Eve and count down to midnight on the 25th when they will exchange presents.
An iconic fictional figure related to Christmas in Western culture is Santa Claus. The story goes that Santa Claus rewards well-behaved children on Christmas night by secretly delivering presents to their houses when they are sleeping. The children then wake up on Christmas morning with an array of gifts all marked from Santa Claus.
