Fresh Spinach Day

Fresh Spinach Day

For as long as Popeye has been opening cans and giving Bluto black eyes, it’s been a well-known plant that is incredibly healthy. The Spinach is one of the most hated and loved vegetables that has ever been on our plates. Fresh Spinach Day celebrates this dark leafy vegetable and all the wonderful ways it can be prepared.

As with many delicious vegetables, spinach has its roots in Ancient Persia. It is now Iran, and some of the neighbouring countries. Some unknown benefactor introduced it to India, then to China where it became known as the “Persian Vegetable” in 647 AD. Its journey around the globe is a story rivaled only in Roman conquest. The spinach found its way in Sicily through the Saracens and then spread across the Mediterranean, before finally reaching England and France in 14th century. It quickly grew to cover every part of the globe, moving along with Western Culture.

Fresh spinach is extremely nutritious and low in calories. It is only 23 calories per 3.5 oz and provides a significant portion of our daily vitamin requirements, including Vitamins A and B, B6, C, E, and K. Additionally, it is incredibly rich in folate, potassium and iron. It’s no surprise that Popeye was so fond of it. Fresh Spinach Day was created to celebrate this amazing little plant.

First, you need to find ways to include spinach in every meal. Baby spinach is great in fruit smoothies. It adds a strong burst of nutrients to your delicious breakfast. You can also enjoy it in a wilted leaf salad or any other salad. We love to add this leafy green to our sandwiches. You’d be amazed at the flavor it gives! It doesn’t matter how you experience it, but fresh spinach day is a great way to get your daily dose. Your health will be better for it!
