Gynecological Cancer Awareness Month

September is Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month and is used as an opportunity to encourage women to become more aware about cancers of the cervix, vagina, vulva, ovaries, and uterus including early detection and prevention.

Established in 1999 by the Foundation For Women’s Cancer, this awareness raising campaign seeks to highlight risk factors, symptoms, early detection and prevention strategies.

Gynaecological cancers are those that develop in a woman’s reproductive tract. These include:

Cervical cancer

Ovarian cancer

Uterine cancer

Vaginal cancer

Vulvar cancer

Affecting approximately 98000 women a year in the United States it is vital that we take to educate ourselves and other women around us about the disease. Vaccines & screening for some cancers are available, but amazingly not everyone takes up the opportunity to have the vaccination or be screened. The importance of either of these should not be underestimated and we must encourage all we know to take them up if available to them

Significant amounts of information are available online about this awareness month and we encourage you to get informed and share your knowledge. With promotional badges, wrist bands, posters, downloads, fact sheets and collection boxes available from the many organisations supporting this campaign it is easy to raise awareness and most importantly funds for more vital research.
