Harlem Globetrotter’s Day

Harlem Globetrotter’s Day

For those of us who grew-up in the age classic Scooby Doo, the Harlem Globetrotters played an interesting role in our lives. The Globetrotters were beloved and would often make an appearance in animations. These basketball stars came from New York and they lived up to their fame and name! The Harlem Globetrotters was founded by Abe Saperstein on January 7, 1927. This African American team of basketball players, originally called the Savoy Big Five was one of the most well-known to ever play the game. Their on-court antics were what made them famous, especially when they won the World Professional Basketball Tournament. They were a firecracker and had a great sense of humor. In 1948, the NBA was founded and the Globetrotters defeated the Minneapolis Lakers. Then in 1950, things became more competitive when African American basketball players were admitted to the NBA. The Globetrotters were still a huge draw despite the new opportunities and continued to travel the world. You can even see them perform for the Pope on Harlem Globetrotter’s Day! You can watch them play basketball or check out their YouTube videos. You can watch their shows with your friends, or you can look up videos of them on Youtube. You will be amazed at the incredible tricks they perform with a basketball. It’s amazing to watch them play, and it’s great for the whole family. Start learning to juggle, practice your trick shots, and then invite friends over to see!
