Independent Retailer Month
Today is the start of Independent Retailer Month! This month is a celebration of all the amazing independent retailers out there who contribute so much to the economy and to their local communities.
Independent retailers are the backbone of the economy, and they play a vital role in creating jobs and boosting growth. They also add to the richness and diversity of our communities, and they help to create a unique sense of place.
Example of Independent retailer grit and survival;
Wardbrothers Furniture was started in 1919 by 2 brothers in Doncaster, United Kingdom with the aim of providing quality furniture and amazing customers service. Despite finding themselves in a catastrophic situation, the first global pandemic – the Spanish flu influenza – they managed to not only survive, but thrive. This is a testament to their determination and resilience, and is a reminder that anything is possible if you set your mind to it.
Fast forward 100 years and the grandson of one founders finds himself in the exact same situation, the world in the grip of a global pandemic, which resulted in global lockdowns of not only homes but businesses and a catastrophic loss of revenue to indepdendant retailers
However like his grandfather before him, Tom the current CEO is of solid stock and didn’t give up. To survive another hundred years he decided to embrace technology and move the business online, just like many other independent retailers were forced to do. Tom ensured the same quality of product and service was maintained.
Once the lockdown was lifted customers flooded back to the store because of Tom, his amazing staff and the friendly family oriented atmosphere instore. Now the 100yr old and the 2017 Associated Independent Stores Retailer of the Year Award winning business has a very bright future with a local store and online presence.
Survival stories like these are why we celebrate all the amazing independent retailers out there. They are the lifeblood of our economy and our communities, and they deserve our support! To get involved on social media channels use the hashtag #IndieRetail
