Indigenous Peoples’ Day

Indigenous Peoples’ Day

The Indigenous Peoples Day is a day to celebrate, honor, and pay respect to the unique heritage, culture, and history of people whose roots are from the Americas.

Native American people across the United States were honored by Indigenous Peoples Day, which was first celebrated in the United States in 2021 when Joe Biden, the US President, became the first to officially recognize it. The idea behind the day dates back further.

The 1977 International Conference on Discrimination Against Indigenous Populations in the Americas was sponsored by the United Nations in Geneva (Switzerland) in 1977. The purpose of this conference was to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day. It included the idea of replacing Christopher Columbus’ adoration and glorifying with acknowledgment and recognition of the native peoples.

In recent years, Columbus Day, an American holiday that falls on the second Monday in October in the United States has become less popular. This could be due to the fact the European settlers took the lives and lands of the native peoples at that time. Americans are now more aware of how history was written from the viewpoint of white people.

Many Americans have started to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day in place of Columbus Day. A celebration of Indigenous Peoples Day was held in Berkeley, California, on October 12, 1992, to coincide with the 500th anniversary the arrival of Christopher Columbus onto American soil. Similar initiatives have been implemented in many other towns and cities, including Los Angeles, California, and Washington DC.

Twelve states in the United States don’t celebrate Columbus Day. South Dakota, however, celebrates Native American Day. Oklahoma’s tribal governments have made statements regarding Native American Day celebrations.

There are many ways that Americans can celebrate the Indigenous Peoples Day. You might consider implementing these ideas to honor the day or coming up with your own creative ideas.

People who are Native American or have an ancestral history should celebrate their heritage. Those who don’t have a family history as a Native American or other indigenous people can still enjoy and support learning more.

People who live in areas where there are large indigenous populations, such as Arizona, California and Oklahoma, South Dakota, will likely find exciting educational programs, celebrations, and events. Participate in a parade, learn an indigenous craft, or listen as a historian explains history.

You can also learn about the current affairs of the local indigenous peoples to find out how you can help them, make a donation, or act as an advocate in order to increase awareness.

Given the fact that the majority of history in the United States over the past 200 years was written from the viewpoint of white people, National Indigenous Peoples Day might be an opportunity for white Americans to look at the world through a different lens. Learn more about the history of the United States before it was settled.

To learn more, read a few books and watch documentaries. These books can help you get more educated.

Many indigenous tribes are known for their artistic talent and meticulous attention to detail. They produce beautiful artwork and handicrafts. You might consider a trip to an area that supports native artists and making a purchase of pottery or blankets, jewelry, painting, or another amazing piece of art.

Visit a museum or exhibit that focuses on the culture and people of the Americas to learn more. You can either visit one of these museums or another local one.
