International Fanny Pack Day

International Fanny Pack Day

The fanny pack. Many people have lost touch with their fashion sense since the 1980s when the fanny pack was popularized as a way to carry a bag around your waist. These fanny bags were sometimes made in bright, neon colors and printed. International Fanny Pack Day is a day when this fashion accessory can be used to raise awareness about a serious social problem, such as feeding the hungry.

In 2007, Nick Yates founded International Fanny Pack Day. After a Christmas party, Nick Yates had a chance encounter with a homeless person. He had been given a fruitcake and an oversized fanny pack at the Christmas party as gag gifts. He decided it would be a good idea to put the fruitcake in the fanny bag. He set off to the bus stop.

On his way to the bus stop, a homeless person teased him about the Fanny Pack. The man asked Mr. Yates for the fruitcake, and he continued his journey. However, he was apparently not too thrilled by the cake. He began to think that the fanny pack could have something to do with helping the hungry. To get the movement going, he would contact food banks. While wearing his fanny pack, he continued to distribute food. This idea was a success and has been celebrated in seven countries.

All over the globe, hunger is a problem. No matter how rich or advanced a country may be, there is always someone who cannot get the things they need. Nick Yates made something from a gag gift and it has helped many people. You can celebrate International Fanny Pack Day by digging out yours from the back of your closet and filling it with food that you can distribute in your community.

When he wanted to make a change, Mr. Yates brought his friends along. Take that example as a guideline and get your friends together to make a difference for your community. Even if your fanny pack is not worn, you can still look around for places where assistance might be needed. There are many places that can help feed the hungry, including food pantries, shelters for homeless, community centers, schools, and other institutions.

There are many ways you can get involved. Volunteer your time to deliver food or serve meals. To help food pantries, you can organize a food drive. To help those at high risk of becoming hungry, you can join forces with other volunteers in the area. Children make up a shockingly large portion of those who are hungry.

Nick Yates’ famous fanny bag has made it possible to have fun with past fashion while helping those in need. Grab your fanny pack to make a difference in someone‚Äôs life.
