Kobe Bryant Day, named in honor of the basketball legend, is observed each year in his honour.

Kobe Bean Bryant was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1978. He would go on to be a star in the National Basketball League. Many people don’t know that Kobe was named after a very expensive Japanese steak, which his father had ordered.

Kobe was born in Italy, where his father was a professional basketball player. Kobe fluently spoke Italian, and he loved soccer and other aspects of Italian culture.

Kobe was 13 years old when his family returned to the United States. He attended Lower Merion High School, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. This high school basketball team hadn’t been to the state championship for 53 years until Kobe arrived.

After four great years of basketball at high school, Kobe Bryant decides to not go to college but instead enters the NBA directly. The Charlotte Hornets drafted him, but it lasted only 16 days. He was then drafted by the Charlotte Hornets, but that only lasted for 16 days.

Kobe suffered a series of injuries over the course of his career that prevented him from playing in the final two seasons. These injuries included a broken knee, Achilles tendon tear and Achilles’ surgery. Bryant decided to end his 2016 season after so many health problems.

Kobe Bryant was a star player in the National Basketball League and also represented the United States at the Olympic basketball tournament. He was awarded two gold medals in Beijing 2008 and London 2012, respectively.

Kobe’s life as a father and husband began just two years after he joined the NBA. Kobe was just 20 when he met Vanessa, his future wife. She was 17 years old and was still in high school. Soon after, they were married. They had four children: Natalia Diamante (Gianna Marie-Onore), Gianna Bella, Bianka Bellea, and Capri Kobe.

Bryant and his daughter, 13 years old, were riding in a helicopter on January 26. Bryant was known for regularly riding in helicopters in Los Angeles to avoid the notorious traffic jams. The helicopter crashed on the side of California’s hillside, killing five families. A group of nine were on their way to a girls basketball tournament. Bryant was just 41 years old.

In honor of his philanthropic efforts through the Kobe and Vanessa Bryant Family Foundation, the city of Los Angeles voted to create August 24 Kobe Bryant Day. This foundation was established to improve the lives of youth in need and families.

Kobe Bryant Day was designated August 24, 2008, because of the numbers 8 and 24 on his jerseys for Los Angeles Lakers.

In August 2020, the Orange County Board of Supervisors officially recognized Kobe Bryant Day. The board unanimously declared August 24 to be Kobe Bryant Day.
