It all began at the Toll House Inn, a small place that you might recognize. It is located in Whitman, Massachusetts and home to the most beloved cookie, the chocolate chip cookie. Ruth Graves Wakefield originally wanted to make a chocolate cookie but decided to add chunks from a chocolate bar. It turned out that the chocolate didn’t melt or mix with the rest, but retained its shape and filled the cookie with little chocolate pieces.
The Toll House Cookie Company was founded, thus the chocolate chip cookie! Since then, new varieties of chocolate chip have been added: white chocolate chip and mint chocolate chips, milk chocolate, bittersweet, dark chocolate, and even dark chocolate. These varieties are being combined with delicious new recipes to create amazing new treats that you will love!
It didn’t happen immediately from chocolate bar to chocolate chips, but there was some innovation in the middle. Nestle decided to include Ms. Wakefield‚Äôs recipe on their wrapper after the success of her cookies. They paid her a lifetime supply of chocolate! A lifetime supply of chocolate! We think it sounds like an amazing deal! Nestle, along with at least one other company, added a chopping instrument to make the bars into cookies. This was true right up to 1941, when they began selling them as chocolate chips‚Äô or chocolate morsels’.
