National Dance Day in the USA

National Dance Day in the USA

National Dance Day in the United States is held on the third Saturday in September.

This annual observance was created by Nigel Lythgoe, producer of the television dance competition show So You Think You Can Dance.

National Dance Day is coordinated by The American Dance Movement, formerly known as the Dizzy Feet Foundation (DFF), which focuses on supporting, improving, and increasing access to dance education in the USA. The foundation was founded in 2009 by Nigel Lythgoe and Adam Shankman. A year later, Lythoe created National Dance Day. His initiative was supported by Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, a long-time proponent of healthy lifestyles.

National Dance Day aims to promote physical fitness and dance education. On the third Saturday in September, DFF hosts a number of events across the United States in order to raise public awareness of dance as a positive and fun way to fight obesity and maintain good health. These events include (but are not limited to) live performances, flash mobs, dance-a-thons, fundraisers etc.

To help you get your groove on, every year DFF records instructional videos with dance routines so there is no excuse not to get involved! The routines are created by renowned choreographers and feature So You Think You Can Dance alumni. The videos typically become available on iTunes a month before National Dance Day.

So young or old, get your leg warmers and sweat bands out, find your favourite tunes and cut a rug!
