National Fossil Day in the USA

National Fossil Day in the USA

Today is National Fossil Day! October 14th 2019 is the day this year that we shine a light on the scientific and educational value of palaeontology and the importance of preserving fossils for future generations

The very first National Fossil Day was observed during Earth Science Week in 2010. This special week has been oraganized annually since 1998 by the American Geosciences Institute. the United States Ferderal Agency, National Park Service together with over 270 partners join together to arrange educational and fun events across the country to raise awareness of the importance of fossils historically and their relevance on our futures.

Every year a new special logo is created to celebrate National Fossil Day. This helps attract public attention to different fossils and share information about it. The new logo is unveiled every year in the mid of January, and it highlights an interesting story related to the fossil record of life.

This event is sure to be a hit with kids across the country not to mention the budding palaeontologists hiding within us all so why not make a visit to your local museum or check out the dedicated website for activities to get involved in.
