National HIV Testing Day in the USA

June 27th is National HIV Testing Day in the USA. Established in 1995 the day aims to encourage people to get tested for HIV, know their status and get linked to care and treatment.

May national organisations, government bodies and medical care providers join forces to raise the profile of the day and the disease.

The day educates people about HIV, what it is, how it is transmitted, who is at risk and the symptoms. It also aims to signpost people who suspect they may be at risk to the relevant places to get tested and the subsequent care and support available to them.

More than 1.1 million people in the U.S. are living with HIV today, and 1 in 7 of them don’t know it. However with awareness continuing to rise and the accessibility to advice and services improving, the annual number of infections in the US is gradually declining.
