Kahlua’s origins can be traced back in 1936 to Pedro Domecq, a man who combined the flavors vanilla, corn syrup, and rum to create one the most loved liqueurs in the world. The name of the alcohol comes from the mesoamerican tribe who inhabited Mexico Valley long before the Spaniards arrived. Literally, Kahlua is “House of Acolhua People”.

Kahlua was initially only known in the immediate vicinity of its creator. However, Kahlua has since gained popularity all over the globe. According to some, it was first imported to America in the 1940s. It is believed that Kahlua was first imported to America in the 1940s by Jules Berman, a Beverly Hills importer. However, this seems a little too late as Kahlua can be found in many forms worldwide.

Kahlua has a low alcohol content, with 20% now (it was 26% in 2004). Kahlua Especial has 36% alcohol.
