National Kouign Amann Day

National Kouign Amann Day

It’s National Kouign Amann Day every year on the 20th of June. We are curious to know what a Kouign Amann is.

A kouign-amann is a type of cake made with lots of butter. The recipe calls for so many butter that the dough puffs up from the cooking process and looks like a pastry.

Depending on the place you purchase it, your kouign-amann might be a very flaky, bite-sized treat or a whole loaf of buttery goodness.

This sweet treat is perhaps not well-known outside of France’s birthplace region. We want to spread the word about it!

National Kouign Amann day was made an official holiday in 2015 by San Franciso bakery b.patisserie.

This round, crusty cake is from France’s Brittany region. The original recipe was made from bread dough and used butter layers folded in. The technique for making a kouign-amann is similar to that used to make puff pastry.

Bake the cake slowly so the butter can puff up the dough. This creates a layer pastry-like cake. The sugar caramelizes leaving a sweet crust.

You might feel like you are eating a croissant, but it is a sweeter, butterier version!

Named kouign-amann, it is derived from the Breton words ‘amann’ (for butter) and ‘kouign (for cake). You know you are in for a buttery treat!

This one is easy – why not try your hand at making a delicious, decadent kouign bread amann? Make sure you share your creations via social media so the rest of the world can enjoy them!

To make a large kouign-amann-sized cake, you can cut it into slices and serve with tea or coffee. Or, if your guests are coming over, this sweet treat can be served in smaller single-serving versions.

If you don’t have the time or skills to cook, you can always visit your local bakery to see if there are any. Although they are a rare treat, you can often find them in traditional pastry shops, particularly French ones.

These delicious treats are sure to please!
