National Mousse Day

National Mousse Day

Mousse of any kind is delicious. It is rich and satisfying and can only be created by a chef who is both a master chef and an artist. Although dessert mousse is most well-known, particularly chocolate mousse, many people don’t know that there are many types of mousse. National Mousse Day is a celebration of this delicious dish and the talented artists who make it.

Most people are familiar with the chocolate mousse and its cousins in dessert mousse. However, the original mousse was created by French chefs in the 18th Century. These mousses were savory, and the sweet version didn’t appear until the late 19th century. Although these original mousses were made with eggs, whipped cream is used in many modern recipes, especially sweet ones. Mousse actually refers to “foam” and “froth”, which is a French term that comes from the French roots.

Making your own mousse at home is the best way to celebrate National Mousse Day. All it takes is putting together your ingredients. So, go to the grocery store and grab:

Heavy cream (2 cups)Eggs (4 large)3 T Sugar1t Vanilla7oz Bittersweet chocolateOptional: Whipping cream for garnish

If you aren’t already familiar with instant read thermometers, you can pick one up while you’re there. Start by heating 3/4 cup of cream. Next, add a pinch salt and sugar to the mixture. Then, separate the yolks from the eggs and mix them in. Mix the mixture until it reaches 160 degrees F. Then strain it through a sieve to add the vanilla.

Place the chocolate in a double boiler and melt it. Then, add it to the custard by whisking. Let it cool down and then put the chocolate in a double boiler. Whip the rest of the whipped cream until it forms stiff peaks. Add 1/4 cup to the mixture and fold in the rest. You can mix it up! You can mix it up by adding some espresso powder, some Grand Marnier (3T), or Cognac (2T) to the custard. After straining it, you should whisk it in.

National Mousse Day will be a memorable one if you make this delicious treat for friends and family.
