National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

A beautiful lagoon is located in the Hawaiian Islands. It is named after the shining jewel formed when a piece sand touches a clam to coat it with sand. This harbor is also home to the United States Pacific Fleet headquarters, which has been an integral part of American Naval deployment in the Pacific Ocean since 1887.

It was little known at the time that an attack against this harbor would bring all the might of the American Military into a conflict it was desperate to avoid. National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day commemorates those who lost their lives in the Japanese attack upon this harbor on December 7, 1941.

This day is sometimes known as Pearl Harbor Day. It is a yearly reminder of those who died at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. We remember those who died in the surprise attack by Japan. This day led to World War Two. The United States declared war against Japan the next day. The official date of the National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day was established in Congress. At the time, the joint resolution was signed by Bill Clinton, then-President.

On this day, tributes are held by organizations all over the country to the memory of Pearl Harbor. Reunions are common and survivors often share their stories. The United States flag is traditionally flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset. This act honors those who died while serving the U.S.A at Pearl Harbor.

There are many memorials to those who died in the bombing of Pearl Harbor today. Pearl Harbor is where many of the crew from the USS Oklahoma, USS Arizona and USS Utah rest. These memorials are a place to honor the fallen servicemen. They are also a poignant and emotional reminder about war and the losses it causes.

The USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park is located at Pearl Harbor. It pays tribute to the American submarine which sank 44 ships in World War Two. The USS Utah Memorial is also available. This memorial is dedicated to the USS Utah, a former battleship that was converted in 1931 into a target vessel. It was attacked on 7th December 1941 and was destroyed. The USS Oklahoma Memorial is another memorial that pays tribute to the battleship, which was also lost on the same date. It resulted in the deaths of 429 men. A marble memorial is located over the sunken battleship USS Arizona. It is dedicated to the 1,177 crew members who perished.

The History of National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day traces the history of the actual attack, which occurred on December 7, 1941. The attack was catastrophic, killing more than 2,400 Americans. It began at 7:48am Hawaiian Time and ended 90 minutes later. This makes the attack extremely devastating. Although multiple ships were damaged in the attack, it could have been worse.

After the attack, intelligence gathered indicated that there would be a third wave of attacks on the island. This invasion fleet was to capture the island and stop it being used as an American base.

What was the purpose of this surprise attack? The US was strategically placed in the Pacific to block Japanese fleet maneuvering. It was hoped that the surprise attack would cause the US Pacific Presence to be crippled and allow them to control the ocean.

National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day allows you to express your support for the veterans still living from the Pearl Harbor bombing and to pay tribute to those who sacrifice their lives daily to protect our country.
