National Preparedness Month

National Preparedness Month

National Preparedness Month focuses on keeping people safe in times of national emergency. National Preparedness Month is a government-approved holiday that helps people prepare for disasters. It gives them the tools and information needed to be able to plan ahead and where to go if they do happen. Learn more about the holiday. Learn more about the holiday’s history and how to participate.

National Preparedness Month was established in 2001, after one of the worst events the United States and the entire world witnessed: September 11, 2001. The Federal Emergency Management Agency established this holiday in September 2004, three years after the event. It was created to assist citizens in being better prepared for emergency situations in their communities and homes. FEMA and other organizations like the American Red Cross or the Department of Home Security helped to launch the Ready Campaign to assist people in preparing for national emergencies.

It has grown its base for preparedness since its inception. This includes helping people across the globe to cover all aspects of hazard situations, such as prevention, response and recovery. September is also a peak month for hurricane season in the United States. This month provides people with the chance to learn more about safety measures in case of an emergency, and educates people about how to deal with disasters that occur. FEMA and other agencies have many resources that can help people get started. This holiday has been approved by the U.S. government.

FEMA and other organizations offer many programs to help you be more prepared for unnatural and natural disasters. Start by learning life-saving skills like CPR and first aid. You should check your insurance policies to cover disasters like floods, earthquakes, or tornadoes.

Consider the cost of emergency measures to help you and your family stay safe. Post this holiday on your favorite social media sites and use #preparednessmonth as a hashtag to let your friends know about the resources available to help keep you safe.
