National Sticker Day

National Sticker Day celebrates all things sticker related, from custom-made to everyday labels. Every sticker has a story. They can be used to decorate or provide information, depending on the situation. They come in many sizes, shapes and colors. They can be used to decorate or store information, such as lunch boxes, paper planners, lockers, and notebooks. Some are even scentable!

Stickers can be used to delight, inform, and decorate. It’s now time to celebrate National Sticker Day.

European merchants were among the first to apply labels to their products to advertise their goods and wares to the public in 1880’s Europe. They used gum paste at first to stick labels on their products. This is why the term “stickers” was invented.

National Sticker Day is observed on January 13, in memory of R. Stanton Avery who was born that day in 1907. R. Stanton Avery was the one who invents the modern sticker. He launched a new company and an industry which is quite impressive considering he was only 30 years old.

R. Stanton Avery, a rags to riches entrepreneur, created the first self-sticking and peel-off labels that were commercially viable. Avery Dennison Corp was also established by Avery to market and manufacture these useful little inventions around the globe.

These products were initially manufactured in a 100-square foot rented loft space in Los Angeles. They became very popular and Stanton Avery’s corporation was valued at tens to millions of dollars by 1997.

Digital printing technology made sticker printing even more popular in the 1990s. Because of the ease of printing, short runs were possible for niche and custom markets.

Because it is all about spreading joy through stickers, this national day is super simple to celebrate. Enjoy these ideas, or create your own creative ways to enjoy the day.
