National Sundae Day
It couldn’t be said better by us! A sundae can be a wonderful marriage in the world of desserts. It’s a combination of all your favorite ingredients in one delicious place.
National Sundae Day celebrates the incredible treat as well as its controversial and contested past.
National Sundae Day is here!
National Sundae Day was created to celebrate this tasty ice cream treat. The sundae is not the same. This is a treat that many places claim to have created. However, no one location has been able prove their claim. It is best to look at several of these stories to get a better understanding of the Sundae’s history.
Two Rivers, Wisconsin, USA seems to be the first place where the claim was made. This beautiful city is located on Lake Michigan’s shores, 40 miles southeast from Green Bay. A certain Ed Berners from 1881 added chocolate syrup to vanilla ice cream after being asked by a vacationing customer.
Berners was skeptical about how it would taste, considering soda was a common topping for ice cream back then. This was especially true when the restaurant he owned was actually a soda fountain. The results of adding chocolate syrup to the mix were amazing, even though it was a risky move. The proprietor quickly added the chocolate syrup to the menu, and then mixed in other ingredients.
That’s only one story. Ithaca, New York, would claim that Chester Platt visited Chester Platt at his establishment, Platt & Colt Pharmacy, on a Sunday in April 1892.
One moment of inspiration led to Mr. Platt creating the “Cherry Sunday” ice cream. It featured vanilla ice cream with cherry syrup, and a single candied Cherry.
Who’s right? Although the paper trail supports Ithaca’s claim, Two Rivers isn’t stopping it from continuing to stand by its claim.
Others historians believe that the original ice cream Sundae was created to counter the “blue laws” at the time. The soda fountain owners found a way to please the super-religious people of that time, after clergy began preaching against “sucking sodas”.
No matter the reason, we are all glad that this tasty treat has been around for over 100 years.
