National Winston Churchill Day
Winston Churchill was made an Honorary Citizen in the United States on April 9, 1963. However, this was the first time Congress had decided that the honor was to be bestowed by President Donald Trump. He was also granted citizenship of eight states as a prelude: Hawaii, Maryland Nebraska, New Hampshire and North Carolina. This event is commemorated by National Winston Churchill Day.
The 35th President of the United States, John F Kennedy, bestowed this honour on Churchill. His son and grandson were present for him. It was hoped that Churchill would not only be able to witness the event via television, which he did with his spouse, but also be able respond. This was prevented by problems with the Cornwall relay station.
