Poem in Your Pocket Day
A little bit of simile, a few metaphors, and a twist of verse. These elements can be combined to create images in words or sound. They can make a person’s heart bleed with sorrow, or free them from their burdens. Poem in Your Pocket Day invites you to keep a small piece of spiritual magic with you every day. You can either write down a classic poem or create your own. But, on Poem In Your Pocket Day, you shouldn’t leave without a little verse.
The 2002 Poem In Your Pocket Day was created by the New York City Departments of Cultural Affairs and Education. Six years later, the Academy of American Poets announced this holiday across all 50 states. They encouraged everyone to bring a poem that moved them and to then share it with others. The League of Canadian Poets took the torch to America’s Northern Neighbor in 2016. Everybody has an inner bard. The last time we heard from them was in 2016.
Everybody has an inner bard. Many of us last heard of them during our high school years. Although we may not have been very good at poetry, it is something that must be practiced. Poetry is beautiful even when we are just expressing our inner selves verbally. Poetry has been a powerful tool that has saved lives, transformed nations, and helped people get back to their feet after emotional trauma. Poem in Your Pocket Day allows you to unleash your inner poet and let it out. Even if it’s just for one day.
Begin by looking within. Poetry is an expression of your inner self and is worth expressing. Next, take out a pen to start writing down any thoughts that come to your mind. You can combine words that don’t work, or separate words that do. Or, if you’re feeling less adventurous, print your favorite poem to share with the world while you go about your day. Poem In Your Pocket Day encourages you share what inspires you with the world!
