Pride Month is a holiday that is observed each June. It is named for the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Pride Month. This holiday was created in June to remember the 1968 Stonewall Riots in Manhattan, New York. Although homosexuality was not a common topic in America during the 1950’s and 1960’s due to social pressures and mental disorders, there was still a large population who believed that these rights should not be violated. They fought against the government for it.

The Stonewall Inn in New York City was raided by New York police for being a gay bar. People reacted to the police and defended the gay bar and their rights to be gay around the world. This was an example of a grass roots revolt that lasted 6 days. It was the start of many people who were previously quiet to speak out in support of their cause.

Since then, support for LGBTQ+ pride has been steadily growing over the past several decades. This is even though the LGBTQ+ lifestyle was taboo in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Pride Month became more popular in the 1990’s and 2000’s as more people supported the movement and understood what it meant to be gay.

Pride Month is one of many holidays that resulted from the LGBTQ+ movement. Its main centre of activity in New York City has seen it grow to be one of America’s most popular celebrations. Parades would be held in NYC. People would wear their most prideful and colorful outfits to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. Other parts of the globe also celebrate the cause for freedom and equal rights for all.
