World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
Every year, on the 15th June, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is observed.
This day is dedicated to raising awareness about the serious problem of elder abuse. Elderly people should receive support and protection throughout the year, and today is a day to ensure that their plight does not go unnoticed.
Elders can suffer financial, emotional, and physical neglect every day. In fact, around 500,000 seniors in the UK are currently being abused.
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is a day to encourage us to take steps to end elder abuse. It raises awareness and provides resources to support the fight against it.
In its 66/127 resolution, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 15th World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. It is intended to be an international day of protest against any abuse of the elderly generation.
The world’s older population is increasing and will continue to grow. In fact, almost all countries around the globe are expecting a significant increase in elderly residents between 2015- 2030.
Elder abuse, despite being a well-known issue and subject to much opposition around the world, is not as widely addressed as other social issues.
Senior citizens have the right to be treated with dignity, respect, and to live a free life without any abuse, exploitation, or neglect.
Today aims to make sure that elderly people are not left homeless, in poor health, hungry, or poverty.
If you wish to fundraise for this cause, there are many ways that you can do so. Donations can also be made to charities that support the elderly or their well-being.
You could volunteer to help the elderly in a retirement home or other place that ensures their happiness. It is also possible to visit an elderly relative, have a chat or enjoy a cup of tea.
Make sure you spread the word on social media by sharing photos about the day.
